Synhelion and Eni team up to produce low emission fuels – Synhelion press release

Lugano/Zurich (Switzerland), June 13 2019 – Synhelion, a spin-off of the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), and leading energy company Eni announce the
development of a new technology for the production of methanol from carbon dioxide (CO2),
water and methane, in a process that requires high temperatures achieved by harnessing
solar energy.
The production of methanol using solar energy is a milestone towards Synhelion’s goal of
replacing conventional fuels by CO2-neutral drop-in fuels. Preliminary data show that the
project that is being developed with Eni will cut over 50% of emissions released in
conventional methanol production.
Synhelion was founded in 2016 and is world leader in the field of solar fuels banking on
more than 10 years of cutting-edge research performed at ETHZ and in-house.
The partnership with Eni is the ideal framework to further develop Synhelion’s innovations
into an economically viable technology and to achieve a wide adoption in the global fuel
